Alcohol can be More Dangerous for Women than Men

Alcoholism in the United States has been on the rise. People drink alcohol to unwind and socialize. When it comes to drinking, women tend to do so to take a break from their mundane daily routine. More women than ever are now drinking, leading to increased hospital visits and arrests due to being intoxicated, is it possible to recover from drug addiction!

According to the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism’s (NIAAA) 2015 National Survey on Drug Use and Health, approximately 15.1 million adult – 9.8 men and 5.3 women – have alcohol use disorders (AUD). Even women enjoy a little toast every so often.

Alcohol-related problems are more common in women than in men. This includes interpersonal violence, alcohol-related car accidents and road traffic accidents. Heavy drinking has been linked to a variety of physical and psychological issues. These include liver diseases, brain damage and breast cancer.

How does alcohol affect the female body?

Women and men process alcohol differently. Alcohol is processed faster by a male’s system than that of a woman’s, who takes longer to digest it. The physical and mental side effects are worse for women than men due to several factors. These include:

A high amount of body weight fat

Even though a woman is lighter than a male, she has more fatty tissue. Fat can help to keep alcohol within the body for longer, so women tend to be more intoxicated and more likely to experience mental issues related to alcohol.

Reduced levels of alcohol-metabolizing enzymes

Two enzymes metabolize the alcohol in the body, Alcohol Dehydrogenase (AD) and Aldehyde Dehydrogenase (ADH). Due to the lower level of enzymes in women’s bodies compared to those of men, they tend to be more prone to absorbing alcohol.

Hormonal changes

Alcohol is destroyed in the liver and stomach by hormonal changes that women experience during their period.

Sexual abuse and violence are more prevalent in the elderly

A woman who has been sexually and physically abused is more likely to abuse alcohol. She may even become addicted.
